Lip filler is one of the most requested aesthetic treatments in the UK — and also one of the most misunderstood. If you've been considering it, you've probably come across a mix of dramatic transformation photos, horror stories and wildly conflicting advice online. As a GMC registered doctor with a specialist interest in facial aesthetics, I want to cut through the noise and give you the honest, medically sound information you deserve before making this decision.
At Revitalise Aesthetics on Castle Street in Liverpool, we see a huge volume of lip filler consultations every week. The questions patients ask are remarkably consistent — so in this article, I'm going to answer them all.
What is Lip Filler and How Does it Work?
Lip filler — also known as lip augmentation — involves injecting a small amount of hyaluronic acid into the lips to add volume, improve shape and enhance definition. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the body, which is why it integrates well with the tissue and feels completely natural once settled.
The procedure itself is relatively quick — typically 30 to 45 minutes including consultation and aftercare advice. A topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to minimise discomfort. The results are visible immediately, though final results are best assessed at two weeks once any initial swelling has fully resolved.
At Revitalise, we only ever use premium, clinically proven hyaluronic acid products — never permanent fillers, which carry significantly higher risks and cannot be reversed.
Can Lip Filler Fix Uneven or Asymmetric Lips?
This is one of the most common reasons people come to us, and the answer is yes — with the right clinician.
Very few people have perfectly symmetrical lips. Slight differences between the left and right sides, or between the upper and lower lip, are entirely natural. The skill in addressing asymmetry lies in the placement of the product — using precise, targeted injection points to balance proportions without overcorrecting.
This is where the difference between a medically trained injector and an unqualified practitioner becomes critical. Correcting asymmetry requires a thorough understanding of facial anatomy, the ability to assess structure and proportion accurately, and the technical precision to deliver product exactly where it is needed. It is not something that can be learned from a one-day course.
During your consultation at Revitalise, we will assess your lip structure in full and discuss whether filler can realistically address your specific concerns — and what the expected outcome looks like for your face individually.
"The goal is never to give everyone the same lips. It's to give every patient the best version of their own lips — balanced, natural and completely them."
— Dr Misha, Revitalise AestheticsWhat to Expect After Treatment
This is something we discuss in detail during every consultation, because managing expectations is just as important as the treatment itself.
In the first 24–48 hours
Some swelling, tenderness and bruising is completely normal — and to be expected. Your lips will likely look more voluminous immediately after treatment than they will once settled. This can be alarming if you're not prepared for it, so we always encourage clients to plan their treatment with this in mind — ideally not the day before a big event.
Days 3 to 7
Swelling begins to settle significantly. You may notice some unevenness during this period as different areas resolve at different rates. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
At two weeks
Your final result is visible. The product has fully integrated with the surrounding tissue and you can now see an accurate representation of your outcome. This is the point at which we recommend a follow-up review — included as standard with every lip filler treatment at Revitalise.
During recovery, we recommend following the aftercare guidance provided by your doctor. As a general rule, avoid intense exercise, alcohol, extreme heat and any pressure on the lips for at least 24 hours. Full aftercare instructions are provided with every treatment — you can also refer to our aftercare leaflet for a detailed guide.
How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last between 6 and 12 months, though this varies considerably from person to person. Several factors influence longevity:
- Metabolism — individuals with a faster metabolism tend to break down filler more quickly
- Lifestyle — smoking, sun exposure and high levels of physical activity can all accelerate filler breakdown
- The product used — different hyaluronic acid formulations have different longevity profiles
- Volume placed — smaller amounts of filler may dissolve more quickly than a fuller augmentation
- Repeat treatments — clients who maintain their results over time with regular top-ups often find that longevity improves, as the lip tissue adapts
We will always be transparent with you about what to expect in terms of longevity during your consultation. There is no single answer that applies to everyone.
Risks and Side Effects — The Honest Truth
Any medical procedure carries risk — and lip filler is no different. As a doctor, I believe it is my responsibility to ensure every patient understands these risks fully before proceeding. Here is a complete and honest picture.
Common side effects (expected and temporary)
- Swelling and bruising — typically resolves within 3 to 7 days
- Tenderness at the injection sites — usually settles within 24 to 48 hours
- Temporary asymmetry during the healing process
Less common complications
- Lumps or irregularities — often resolve naturally but can be treated if needed
- Infection — rare, but managed with appropriate clinical intervention
- Delayed-onset nodules — small inflammatory responses that can occur weeks to months after treatment
Rare but serious risks
The most serious risk associated with any filler injection is vascular occlusion — where product is inadvertently placed into or compresses a blood vessel, potentially restricting blood flow to the surrounding tissue. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate intervention with hyaluronidase.
This is precisely why choosing a GMC registered doctor for lip filler matters so profoundly. At Revitalise, both doctors carry emergency dissolving agents as standard and are clinically trained to recognise and manage vascular complications immediately — a level of preparedness that many non-medical practitioners simply do not have.
"Knowing how to manage complications is not optional in aesthetics — it's a fundamental clinical requirement. It's one of the many reasons our background in emergency medicine is so important to what we do."
— Revitalise AestheticsCan Lip Filler Be Dissolved if I'm Not Happy?
Yes — and this is one of the most reassuring aspects of hyaluronic acid filler. It is fully reversible.
An enzyme called hyaluronidase can be injected to break down hyaluronic acid quickly and safely. Most clients see significant dissolution within 24 to 48 hours of treatment. In most cases, the lips return to their natural baseline.
This reversibility is one of the core reasons we at Revitalise only use hyaluronic acid products. We would never use permanent fillers — the inability to reverse them removes a critical safety net and creates risks that, in our clinical opinion, are entirely unnecessary.
If you're considering lip filler and the idea of not liking the result concerns you, this should provide genuine reassurance. Nothing is irreversible. You are always in control.
How to Prepare for Your Lip Filler Appointment
A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring the smoothest possible experience and the best possible outcome.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours beforehand — alcohol thins the blood and increases bruising
- Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment
- Arrive with clean lips — no lip liner, gloss or balm
- Plan your schedule — avoid events where you'd rather not have visible swelling for at least 72 hours after treatment
Your consultation at Revitalise will cover everything specific to your circumstances. This is general guidance — your doctor may have additional recommendations based on your medical history.
How to Find the Right Lip Filler Provider in Liverpool
This may be the most important section in this entire article.
The UK aesthetics industry is largely unregulated. That means that with the exception of prescription-only products such as anti-wrinkle injections, many treatments — including hyaluronic acid lip filler — can legally be administered by someone with no medical training whatsoever. The consequences of poor technique, contaminated product or inadequate emergency preparedness can be serious and, in some cases, irreversible.
When choosing a lip filler provider, ask these questions:
- Are you GMC registered? If yes, verify their registration number at gmc-uk.org
- Are you listed on the Save Face or JCCP register? These are the two most respected practitioner registers in UK aesthetics
- Do you carry hyaluronidase? A practitioner who cannot dissolve filler in an emergency should not be administering it
- Do you offer a consultation before treatment? Ethical practitioners will never rush straight to treatment
At Revitalise Aesthetics, both Dr Amy and Dr Misha are GMC registered doctors with backgrounds in emergency medicine. Every treatment begins with a thorough, unhurried consultation. We carry emergency equipment as standard. And we will always be honest with you — including if we don't think treatment is appropriate for you.
Your safety is never secondary to a sale.
