What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid (HA) — a substance naturally found in the body — to restore volume, enhance contours and rejuvenate the face. At Revitalise, all filler treatments are performed by GMC-registered doctors who understand facial anatomy in depth.

We offer mid to high-end products and take a conservative, bespoke approach. Our philosophy is always enhancement of your own features.

Filler is not one treatment. Where product is placed, how much is used and which product is chosen all change with the area being treated. A cheek is not a chin and neither is a tear trough. Lips are handled separately on our lip filler page, and if you would prefer gradual collagen stimulation to immediate volume, Sculptra may be more appropriate.

Risks and Side Effects

Every medical procedure carries risk. We would rather you read this before you book than after.

Common and expected

  • Swelling and bruising. Usually settles within 3 to 7 days
  • Tenderness at the injection sites
  • Temporary asymmetry while the swelling resolves

Less common

  • Lumps or irregularities. These often resolve on their own and can be treated if needed
  • Infection. Rare, and managed clinically
  • Delayed-onset nodules. These can appear weeks or months after treatment

Rare but serious

The most serious risk with any filler is vascular occlusion — where product is placed into a blood vessel or compresses one, restricting blood flow to the surrounding tissue. It is a medical emergency and needs immediate treatment with hyaluronidase.

Vascular risk is not uniform across the face, and classifications vary. Several areas carry serious vascular risk, and the tear trough in particular is a higher-risk and technically demanding area. This is the reason a doctor matters. Both of our doctors are GMC-registered, come from emergency medicine and are trained to recognise and manage vascular complications immediately. Hyaluronidase is held on site as standard.

Dermal filler is not appropriate for everyone. We will assess your suitability and explain the risks in full at your consultation. You can also read our detailed guide to filler risks.

A note on tear trough

Tear trough filler is one of the treatments where patient selection matters most. Not everybody with dark circles or tired-looking eyes is a suitable candidate, because filler only addresses certain causes of that appearance. Working out which cause is driving the look you are unhappy with is the point of the consultation. Where filler is not the answer, we will say so.

Recovery, Day by Day

First 24 to 48 hours. Swelling, tenderness and some bruising are normal. Avoid intense exercise, alcohol, extreme heat and pressure on the treated area.

Days 3 to 7. Swelling settles noticeably. Some unevenness during this window is expected, as different areas resolve at different rates.

At two weeks. Your final result is visible. This is when we recommend your complimentary review appointment.

Aftercare. Full guidance is given at your appointment and set out in our dermal filler aftercare leaflet.

When Filler Is Not the Answer

We will say no to dermal filler when we do not believe it is safe, anatomically appropriate, or likely to give you the result you are hoping for.

Being able to perform a treatment does not automatically mean it is the right treatment.

Sometimes the concern is skin quality rather than volume, in which case skin boosters or polynucleotides may be more appropriate. Sometimes the right answer is to do nothing yet.

Revitalise is not trying to find a reason to inject someone. The consultation exists to decide whether injecting you is actually the right thing to do.

Filler Dissolving

We do see patients who come to us unhappy with filler placed elsewhere. Dissolving is not about criticising another practitioner. Filler can migrate, become uneven, leave unwanted fullness, or simply no longer suit what you want.

Hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve hyaluronic acid filler. It is also an important medicine in the management of certain filler complications, which is why we hold it on site.

Before dissolving for aesthetic reasons we assess what has previously been injected, where it appears to be sitting, and what you ultimately want to achieve. Sometimes the best plan is to dissolve first and reassess, rather than placing more filler on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

When administered by a trained medical doctor, dermal fillers are very safe. At Revitalise, our GMC-registered doctors have a thorough understanding of facial anatomy and vascular safety, and hyaluronidase (dissolving enzyme) is always available on-site.

This depends on the product used, the area treated and your metabolism. Cheeks and other facial areas typically last 12–18 months. We will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation.

Absolutely. Our philosophy is natural enhancement — we never overfill. We take time at every consultation to assess what will genuinely suit your facial proportions.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved using hyaluronidase. We always carry this on-site. This is one of the key safety advantages of HA filler.

Yes — completely free and with no obligation to book any treatment. We want you to feel fully informed before committing to anything.

Dermal filler is temporary, and longevity varies by treatment area, product and individual. Structural filler in areas such as the cheeks, chin and jawline may commonly last around 12 to 18 months, although some patients notice changes sooner and some results persist longer. We assess maintenance individually rather than recommending treatment simply because a set number of months has passed.

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved using hyaluronidase, which we hold on site. Dissolving is priced at £199. We would assess what has been placed and where before agreeing a plan with you.

By assessment, not from a menu. Your doctor looks at your facial proportions, what you want to change and what would genuinely suit you, then agrees the area, product and volume with you before anything is booked. Treatment may not be appropriate for everyone.
