This leaflet covers what to expect after dermal filler or lip filler treatment. It is general guidance to support your recovery. It does not replace the personalised advice your treating clinician gives you. Always follow the specific instructions you were given on the day.
What to Expect After Treatment
Some swelling, tenderness and redness around the treated area is normal. Mild bruising can also happen. Lips tend to swell more than other areas, often for the first day or two.
This settles steadily as the days pass. Your result usually becomes clear at around two weeks, once any swelling has fully resolved. Try not to judge the outcome before then.
The First 24 Hours
Be gentle with the treated area and keep it clean. A cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth can ease swelling — use it for short periods rather than continuously.
- Avoid touching, pressing or massaging the area unless your clinician has shown you otherwise
- Leave makeup off the treated area for the rest of the day
- Sleep with your head slightly raised on the first night if your lips feel swollen
- Drink plenty of water and rest
The First Few Days
Swelling and tenderness ease over the first few days. Any small bruises usually fade within a week or so. Most people return to their normal routine the next day.
Give the area time to settle. Lumps or firmness in the first week are common as the filler integrates, and they usually soften on their own.
What to Avoid
To support healing, we suggest avoiding the following:
- Strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours
- Alcohol for 24 hours
- Extreme heat such as saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, hot yoga and sunbeds for one to two weeks
- Facials, massage or other treatments over the area for two weeks
- Pressing, rubbing or firmly massaging the area unless your clinician advised it
- Where possible, planning routine dental work for the two weeks after lip filler

Emergency Warning Signs

- Skin that turns pale, white, blue or develops a blotchy, mottled pattern
- Pain that is severe, or that builds rather than settles
- Skin that feels cold, or that develops blisters or sores
- Spreading redness, heat, swelling or pus, or feeling generally unwell with a temperature
If you cannot reach us and you are worried, seek urgent medical advice without delay.
Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if you have:
- Any change to your vision
- Difficulty breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
These are emergencies. Please do not wait.
Your Follow-Up Review
A review is included as standard with your treatment. We use it to check how you are healing, look at your result together and answer any questions. This is usually at around two weeks, once swelling has settled.
If you have any concern before your review, do not wait for it — contact us.
